2025 Autumn newsletter

A message from our CEO

The weeks just before the summer holidays produced some notable publications and events in health and care, and in healthcare innovation in particular. Now that we’re well and truly into the usual Autumn calendar of planning deadlines and external events, we thought it would be helpful to provide a round-up.

Many of our NHS colleagues are facing a period of considerable uncertainty from the forthcoming Department of Health and Social Care/ NHS England merger, the big restructuring processes impacting on ICBs and the cost savings targets facing providers. It is at times like this that innovation and transformation are most needed, but of course it is even more difficult to plan for future benefits when there is so much to do today. We are sensitive to the conflicting demands facing colleagues in the system and, as the local experts in implementing health innovation, we are as committed as ever to supporting you all through this period.

In July we had the privilege of leading a session of the East of England All-Party Parliamentary Group. The session was titled ‘Delivering health innovation and improvement in the East’. We were joined by over 115 partners from the NHS, local and national government and industry, alongside eight of the region’s MPs, who attended to hear the case for scaling innovation across our region, with the huge benefits that this would bring to population health, patient outcomes and NHS productivity. A full summary of the discussion is available on our website.

July also saw the publication of the government’s 10 Year Health Plan and the Life Sciences Sector Plan. These two strategies highlight the role that health innovation has in building a stronger, more future-focused NHS and the importance of the life sciences industry to the UK as a whole. We have also seen the announcement of the first beneficiaries under the national neighbourhood health implementation programme (a first step towards establishing specifically-funded local health and care schemes) and the announcement of the £85m 'Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme'  – please get in touch with your usual contact if you require support with this.

This newsletter shares just some of the ways we have partnered with colleagues across the East of England to implement and scale innovation in health and care, and we included many more examples in our latest Impact Review (see below). Looking ahead more generally, we now await central guidance on how the big initiatives set out in the NHS Ten Year Plan will be delivered. Much of this will inevitably be the responsibility of local clinicians, managers and systems. We will continue to support health providers, NHS staff and the private sector to implement innovative ways to achieve the objectives of the Plan locally across the East of England.

I hope you enjoy reading our Autumn newsletter. Please don’t hesitate to reach out through your usual Health Innovation East contact if you would like to follow up on any of the stories featured.
